HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE JOB
We've all heard the expression "the right tool for the job." Well, when you're tackling those home improvement projects around the house you'll quickly discover there isn't a more succinct idiom than that one. Many homeowners (myself included) have approached a project armed with every iota of knowledge one may need only to find they don't have one critical piece of equipment to complete, or even start, the task. Let's take a few moments to go over some details of project planning so you're properly outfitted the next time you begin a job.
When planning to build, improve, or fix something around the house most of us don't mind asking for advice so we do it right the first time. However, many times we'll discover that a job that seems quick and easy takes much longer than expected because we have to "make do" with the wrong tool. Once you know what needs to be done to complete your task, take a little extra time to make certain you understand how to do it most effectively and what tools will help you do it.
Pretty much everybody has figured out that power tools are essential to making jobs faster and easier. Also, power tools help ensure that the completed project comes out looking its best. If you've every used a hand saw for cutting you've probably realized a circular saw, a jigsaw, or a reciprocating saw makes much cleaner, quicker, and more accurate cuts. Find out what blade works best for your project and make sure that's the blade you use. Another important aspect of doing a job well is making sure the materials you're using are properly secured. Clamping makes cutting, drilling, and many aspects of a task much safer and easier. Especially when using power tools, you don't want what you're working on moving unexpectedly. Of course, with any home improvement project, make sure you take the proper safety precautions and always were protective equipment when doing the job. Gloves, eye protection, dust masks, ear protection, and good judgment will always help your job a success.
The next time you face a project around the house, it's always worth the extra planning and cost to be prepared with the necessary equipment. Know-how and materials will almost always get the job done but the right tools will get it done faster, safer, and better. Besides, picking up a new tool for a new project will make you better prepared for the next one.
