Why You Should Join the Great Backyard Bird Count This Weekend

One of the things I love most about living in the Hudson Valley is how deeply connected we are to the natural world. Even in the colder months, there’s life all around us—especially if you pause long enough to notice. Birds move through bare branches, gather at feeders, and remind us that nature doesn’t stop just because winter lingers.

That’s why I look forward each year to the Great Backyard Bird Count, taking place February 13–16, 2026. It’s a simple, meaningful way to connect with nature, support real scientific research, and spend a little time outdoors—even in the colder months.

While my role centers on helping people improve their homes, I believe just as strongly in improving how we experience the spaces outside our doors. This annual event is a perfect reminder that sometimes the most rewarding moments happen right in our own backyards.

What the Great Backyard Bird Count Is—and Why It Matters

The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a global citizen-science initiative that invites people of all ages and experience levels to observe and count birds over a four-day period. You can participate from your backyard, a porch, a local park, or even a balcony or bay window—anywhere you can watch birds for at least 15 minutes.

Your observations are submitted online and combined with data from people around the world, creating a snapshot of bird populations that helps scientists track migration patterns, population changes, and environmental trends. It’s one of the easiest ways to contribute to conservation—no expertise required.

Whether you’re a seasoned birdwatcher or someone who simply enjoys watching birds at a feeder, the GBBC is designed to be accessible and rewarding. Tools like the Merlin Bird ID app make identification easy, turning a quiet moment into something that truly matters.

Step 1: Dress for Comfort and Choose Your Spot

Birdwatching in February doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. In fact, staying warm and relaxed often means you’ll stay outside longer—and notice more.

At select Williams Lumber and Home Centers locations, you’ll find Carhartt cold-weather clothing, designed for real outdoor conditions. A warm jacket, hat, and gloves can make all the difference when you’re standing still and observing. Pair that with a YETI mug, also available at select locations, to keep coffee, tea, or hot cocoa warm while you count.

Once you’re comfortable, choose a good viewing spot:

  • Near trees, shrubs, or feeders
  • Overlooking open yard space
  • Along a quiet trail or park bench

Bring a notebook or your phone and give yourself permission to slow down.

Step 2: Set Up Feeders to Attract Birds

One of the easiest ways to support birds—and increase what you’ll see during the count—is by offering consistent food sources.

Ace Hardware bird feeders and birdseed are available at all Williams Lumber and Home Centers locations, making it easy to get started or refresh what you already have. From tube feeders and platform feeders to suet cages and seed blends, our associates can help you select the right setup for the birds common to our area.

High-quality birdseed is especially important in winter, when natural food sources are limited. Adding or replenishing feeders now supports local bird populations and makes your bird count more engaging and successful.

Step 3: Observe, Identify, and Submit Your Count

Once you’re set up, observe birds for at least 15 minutes. Count the number of each species you see at one time, being careful not to double-count birds as they come and go.

If you’re unsure what you’re seeing, the Merlin Bird ID app is a great resource—it helps identify birds by sight or sound. After your count, submit your observations through Merlin or eBird, or visit www.birdcount.org for instructions and resources.

You can participate as often as you’d like during the four-day event, in different locations or at different times of day.

Step 4: Think Beyond the Weekend—Create Bird-Friendly Spaces

Many people discover that once they start noticing birds, they want to do more to support them year-round.

Simple steps include:

  • Keeping feeders clean and filled consistently
  • Providing fresh water when possible
  • Planting native shrubs and trees
  • Leaving natural areas for shelter
  • Reducing chemical use in lawns and gardens

At Williams Lumber and Home Centers, our teams are happy to help you think through these ideas—whether you’re adding a feeder, planting for wildlife, or planning a larger outdoor improvement.

For bigger outdoor or habitat-focused projects, our experienced associates can help coordinate planning at all Williams Lumber and Home Centers locations except Red Hook, working with you, your contractor, or your landscaper to make sure everything is done thoughtfully and correctly.
