Kim Williams, Williams Lumber & Home Centers SVP of Retail Operations, reveals how to update the exterior of your home to make a major impact. By choosing the right exterior color palette, you can maximize your curb appeal and make a statement in your neighborhood, all while getting the biggest bang for your buck. Read her tips below to give your home a valuable upgrade.

Focus on the Front Door

The front door is the entryway to your home, which makes a statement from the start. Giving your front door a new coat of paint can complement your home’s existing color scheme, or it can become a colorful accent piece. The newly painted door can completely transform the look and feel of your home, all while creating a seamless transition as you walk through the front door.

“When picking a color for the front door, it is important to stand back and take in all of the colors on and around the home,” Williams says. A colorful front door is a great way to express your personal flair and style, giving your space a simple pop. She adds, “Don’t miss out on the opportunity to carry over your newly painted door to the interior side of the door as well.”

Consider carrying over the same exterior color, or coordinate another color in the same color palette, into your interior entry. Williams suggests using Benjamin Moore premium paints, which have an endless color palette and a variety of sheens to make this project easy and perfect for any vision you have. You will be elated.

Williams adds one final tip, don’t forget to “accessorize” your front door. Add on a new lockset, unique door knocker, house number, or kick plate. If you’re looking to just start from scratch, choose a brand new door, like Therma-Tru exterior doors, which are fiberglass doors that offer energy efficiency, durability, and very little maintenance.

Transform a Deck, Porch, or Patio

We are all finding creative ways to extend our living space to the outdoors as more time is spent at home with family and friends. Most homes have some form of a deck, patio, or porch that has been used to gather, entertain or just hang out. Some are completely underutilized. Transforming these areas can have a profound effect on how we feel, live, and play in our home.

Refreshing your wood deck and protecting it at the same time is made easier with Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Exterior Stains. Arborcoat comes in a variety of different opacities and colors. If you aren’t ready to fully commit to a color, you can purchase pint-size color sample cans to test stain selections on the actual wood you will be coating. Williams stresses that preparation is key to any painting or staining job.

If your wood deck is too far gone and a stain won’t do the trick, then you may want to consider a new Trex deck. Trex is a high-performance, durable, eco-friendly alternative to wood decking. With the wide variety of decking and railing options that Trex offers, you can customize and create the deck of your dreams.

Last but not least is the porch or patio. There are many ways to give you porch a simple upgrade without tackling a huge exterior project. Maybe you have a concrete slab that was poured out in your backyard. A simple solution to restore this space is to paint the concrete slab and throw down an outdoor rug. You can also take your project to the next level and paint or stencil a pattern, letting your creativity flow! Again, prep work is extremely important for this project. Benjamin Moore’s Porch and Floor paint is a great choice to complete this project.

To extend onto your newly created patio or deck, you can add some bluestone, decorative stone, and landscaping. Investing in the latest wood or propane fire pits or heaters can carry your outdoor fun well into the cooler weather. The possibilities are endless and sometimes overwhelming when it comes to upgrading the exterior of your home. The best way to stay on top of the projects and maintain the longevity of your home is to take note of the conditions of your windows, siding, and roof. When you make a plan to work through the preventative maintenance of your exterior, you will have a lot more control and peace of mind in your home.  Williams Lumber will guide and help you nail those projects right the first time. Planning, prepping, and patience are the key to all successful projects!
