Kim Williams, SVP of Retail Operations at Williams Lumber, reveals the hottest trends in kitchen design.
Considering a kitchen renovation? Building a kitchen from scratch? Where do you even start? My advice—take a look at what’s trending. Then decide what speaks to you and incorporate any or all of the trends into your kitchen plans. So let’s take a close look at what’s “hot” today.
Simple, functional layouts
The overall theme in today’s kitchen is simplicity. We’re seeing mid-century modern making a comeback, with clean lines, functional layouts, an accent on wood, and colors inspired by nature—reminiscent of the 50s and 60s. (Remember the original Eames Chair? It was based off a traditional English club chair, and became an icon of that era. With mid-century modern back in style, Eames styling is experiencing a resurgence, even in kitchens.)
Organic, earthly colors
Now let’s talk hues. While our designers are seeing more stained cabinets versus painted cabinets, paint is still a very big component of the kitchen—but with a bit of a twist. The palette has moved away from grays and whites to more organic colors such as sage and earthy tones like warm browns and terracotta. Check out Regent Green, Topaz, and Honeybee from Benjamin Moore®. It’s a great place to start for color choices.
Here’s another color trend: While two colors in one space has been around for about 15 years, more recently, we’ve seen three colors in a single space—as in one color on the upper cabinets, a second on the lower cabinets, and a third on the island or woodwork. Or the kitchen island, always a dramatic focal point, features one color and the cabinets in different colors. Here’s an interesting tidbit: Did you know that the fashion world drives color? That’s right! What we see in Paris makes its way to automobiles and cabinets about two to three years later.
Sleek cabinets, creative islands
We’re also seeing flat-panel Shaker cabinet doors with narrower, smaller panels taking center stage these days, due to their clean lines and more modern look. Consider Schrock®, a trusted brand that offers well-built cabinetry backed by a limited lifetime warranty, or any of our 10 brands of exceptional cabinetry.
As you’d expect, islands are always popular, but they’re evolving to be more functional and creative. Consider waterfall edges that appear to cascade down over the side of the island and onto the floor. We’re also seeing sinks and icemakers—even multiple sinks—set inside the island.
Facelift vs. complete renovation
Of course, if you don’t want a complete makeover, or it’s simply not in the budget, there’s a great deal you can do to change the “face” of your kitchen. Swap out the cabinets with new hardware with finishes and styles like chrome, nickel, and stainless steel. Or add new countertops like Caesarstone or Corian, or ultra-compact countertops—also known as ultracompact or compact surfaces made from a blend of natural minerals, resins, and pigments.

Your dream kitchen is waiting! Look to the certified designers and associates at Williams Lumber and Home Centers to help make it a reality.
“We were extending our house and doubling the square footage. Part of this renovation included building a new kitchen where the old garage used to be. It was important to us to have a modern and clean kitchen that could withstand our three boys roller skating or kicking a ball around it.
“Our contractor had suggested a budget that was well out of our range, so we went directly to our local Williams Lumber Home Center in Rhinebeck. The kitchen designer walked us through all the options and helped us find a solution that fit our needs and budget. They had multiple budget-friendly options that provided the look and feel we were going for, and the designer built out the entire kitchen with suggested cabinet and storage options. They also suggested drawer inserts and hardware options. It was so easy and a pleasure to work with such professionals.
“Twelve years later, the kitchen is still the main focus of our home. We’ve not had to replace any of the cabinets, and they have held strong through the raising of our three boys. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to work with Williams Lumber Home Center! Their commitment to quality and customer satisfaction has truly stood the test of time.”
